Dear carriage house owner,

I am writing you to see if you are interested in joining a carriage house association?

My wife Jean and I have lived in a 1900ish carriage house in Newton Centre which we converted in the mid eighties. As we drive around Newton and Brookline, it is obvious that many other people are living in converted carriage houses and that many of these spaces are as unusual and interesting as the one we live in. It is also clear that there are still many carriage houses that remain unoccupied or used as garages and storage buildings.

I have searched the web and bookstores looking for information on converted carriage houses but to no avail. I can’t help but feel that this is not because of a lack of interest but rather the fact that no one has yet organized carriage house owners.

Here are some of my thoughts about what a carriage house association might offer:

• web site
This web site could include tours of individual carriage houses, stories by people living in carriage houses, carriage house of the month, issues around the conversion of carriage houses (ie. zoning, historical designation, etc),
• newsletter (similar to web site)
• carriage house walking tour,
• resource for those interested in converting their carriage house,
• resource for architectural design ideas,
• unique decorating of carriage houses,

If you are interested in exploring the idea of a carriage house association and all of the possibilities, please contact us at or (617) 527-5670.

Please feel free to reproduce this flier and send to anyone else you know who owns or lives in a carriage house.
